Howell Mountain Vineyards (HMV) wines are all produced from grapes grown on the Beatty Ranch. Mike Beatty purchased the vineyard in 1977 and has been farming it since, selling grapes to some of Napa Valley’s most prestigious wineries as well as keeping the best for his personal Howell Mountain Vineyards project. Raised as a farmer in Ohio, from a family with generations of farmers, Mike came to California in the early 60’s as a student at Stanford University, leaving behind Beatty Farms. After several years of working as a chemist and selling scientific equipment, Mike missed farming. Having become something of a wine enthusiast, Mike purchased a vineyard almost fifty years ago (which he called Beatty Ranch, a nod to Beatty Farms). In 1988, the Howell Mountain Vineyards project began with the first crush for the new brand. Both HMV and Beatty Ranch have since been an integral part of the emergence and development of the Howell Mountain sub appellation in Napa Valley. The brand is led by Mike and his son Patrick Beatty, in conjunction with winemaker Bryan Kane. The vineyard is farmed bioharmonically – a philosophy that embraces a pursuit of balance with integrity. As a result, the wines show the elegance and depth for which the appellation is renowned.
