2018 Beatty Ranch Zinfandel

"The wines in 2018 from Howell Mountain Vineyards show finesse up front and lead to a good balance of fruit and tannins across the wines. Our 2018 Beatty Ranch reserve zinfandel embraces the spicy characteristics from these old vines - the oldest in the entire appellation. In the glass, the nose bursts with black pepper and Asian spices with deep underlying black cherry cola fruit notes. At first sip, the spice and tannins dominate the palate. Black cherry fruit begins to break-through under a chorus of spices which focuses the fruit. This wine dives deep into the palate supported by bright acid and firm tannins giving this wine ageability for several years."
"In the glass, rich, medium-dark color is exposed with a slight purple hue. On the nose, the wine exhibits a bouquet of red currant and blackberries up front followed by a hint of crème de cassis, dusty undertone reminiscent of the rich, red volcanic soil. On the palate, the wine exhibits well integrated tannins with underlying notes of dark blackberry and black currant fruit. The wine finishes with hints of tobacco and leather along deep, dark layers of fruit and firm tannins which provide structure into the finish, which will allow this wine to age well."

"On the nose, this wine produces a melody of fruit starting with red cherry notes leading to darker black cherry notes upon further examination. On the palate, layers black pepper spice dominate the entry supported by a rich, fuller than normal, body of black raspberry and dark cherry fruit with hints of cloves and dark plum fruit in the finish supported by well integrated tannins which expose lingering notes of anise and creme de cassis."
"In 2018, we again produced our Primitivo Clone wine. This newer planting of the Primitivo Clone of zinfandel produces a more fruit forward, full-bodied wine that differs greatly from our wines produced from the vineyard’s old vines. A popular wine right out of the bottle, this wine has notes of red cherry fruit with some black pepper spice. This wine is filled with bright red fruit on the palate with a core of crushed pepper spice on a medium bodied palate. This wine drinks well now and should be enjoyed over the next 5 years."

Hauntingly dark in the glass at first sight, our 2017 Howell Mountain Petit Verdot exhibits the classic characteristics of this highly tannic, black fruit grape. The light crop and smaller than normal berries produced a dense, chewy, full structured wine with firm tannins. On the palate, the hints of blackberry, blueberry and earthy, cigar box and leather notes fought its way through the tannins. This wine continues its dark fruit decent into the palate and finishes with a long mouth-drying finish with firm tannins and gripping acid, begging for this wine to be cellared up to 10-12 years.
Over the last couple of years, Howell Mountain Vineyards Cabernets (both our Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) have been awarded the #1 or #2 Wine of the Year. 2021 Holiday & New Releases
Dear Friends of Howell Mountain,
We just finish putting the last of the wine in barrel before the Thanksgiving break, and we would have to say that the 2021 was another exceptional growing season on Howell Mountain! Although the rain came early this year, everything was fully ripened, and we were able to pick all of the grapes for both Howell Mountain Vineyards and the other wineries who use our grapes.
The 2021 vintage looks to be a winemaker's year. The grapes tended to be smaller than average leading to a lower yield, producing higher quality grapes with a higher skin to pulp ratio, leading to more intense flavors in the wine. From what we've seen at Howell Mountain and what the experts are saying, 2021 may prove to be an exceptional vintage and one not to be missed.
With Thanksgiving behind us, we have entered the heart of the Holiday Season, and the launch of the Howell Mountain Vineyards Holiday Gift Packs. This year, again we offer 4 different gift packs that offer a 26% to 35% off our retail price. Each gift set offers FREE Tissue Wrapping and a FREE Gift Card! Spring in here and Howell Mountain Vineyards are in full bloom. Although, we had a few more nights of frost this year, the vines look good and we expect a consistent fruit set this year. The 2021 Vintage is off to a excellent start.
We thank you all for your thoughts and prayers last year during the Glass Fire on Howell Mountain. Fortunately, Howell Mountain Vineyards and the Beatty Ranch were spared from the fire. Due to the wind direction, we had no detectable smoke taint in our fruit which is very fortunate since the 2020 Vintage may be the best vintage of the century. The fruit was balanced with small berries which produced intense wines from the vineyard. We are excited about how the 2020 Vintage wines are developing.
Lastly, we have our new 2021 Spring Release wines which include two Zinfandels, Reserve Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and our Cabernet Franc which was named "Top Cabernet Franc in the World" at the prestigious TEXSOM International Wine Competition. Some of these wines have a very limited production, so get your order in soon.

Named "Top Cabernet Franc in the World"
The 2016 Howell Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Franc was named "Top Cabernet Franc in the World" at the prestigious TEXSOM International Wine Competition. Every year, over 100 of the world's top sommeliers from around the globe come together to judge wine from across the world's finest wine growing regions. Wines are categorized by varietal and/or blend, and, for each category, one wine is chosen as the best wine in its class and awarded the Judge's Selection.
This last year, our 2016 Howell Mountain Vineyards Cabernet Franc was tasted blind, alongside dozens for the world's top Cabernet Franc wines. After the judging was completed, our wine was chosen as the Judge's Selection and named the Top Cabernet Franc in the World!
Our Cabernet Franc is one of our limited production wines, so, although we are just releasing this wine, supply may be limited. So get your order in soon!
We are excited to share our new 2021Spring Release wines with you including limited production Bordeaux varietal wines including our Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and our Reserve Beatty Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon. "At first sight, this wine looks massive with its dark black color. In the nose, the wine exhibits dark, dusty blackberry fruit with a undertone of licorice reminiscent of “sen sen” breath mints. On the palate, the wine uncovers layer upon layer of dark fruit and earthy tannins with a long finish."
"Soft, supple and richly etched in red fruit, this wine is also earthy in cedar, tobacco and dusty rock. Tight, firm tannins give it pronounced structure and elegance around peppery spice and lasting oak, the wine aromatic in mountain violet and sage."
"This is a thick, brooding red wine from the producer's own estate vineyard—a study in dusty rock, graphite and dark cherry. It's springtime at Howell Mountain Vineyards and the vines look great! The weather was near perfect this spring as it was the first time in over 40 years that we didn't have to turn on the frost protection fans once at our estate, the Beatty Ranch. If spring is any indication of the vintage, we are heading for 2020 to be one of the greatest vintages ever!
With Spring here, it's time to release our new Zinfandel Wines. This release contains our new vintage of our Old Vine Zinfandel, our most popular Zinfandel, and the second release of our Primitivo Clone Zinfandel. Both wines have been well received by the press with both wines achieving 90+ point ratings.
With many of us under "shelter in place" orders, we've had a number of people requesting more in-home wine experiences. So, by popular demand, Howell Mountain Vineyards is conducting its first ever Virtual Wine Tasting with lead by winemaker, Bryan Kane and winegrowers Mike & Patrick Beatty. 2016 Old Vine Zinfandel

On the nose, this wine produces a melody of fruit starting with red cherry notes leading to darker black cherry notes upon further examination. On the palate, layers black pepper spice dominate the entry supported by a rich, fuller than normal, body of black raspberry and dark cherry fruit with hints of cloves and dark plum fruit in the finish supported by well integrated tannins which expose lingering notes of anise and creme de cassis.
Our 2016 Primitivo Clone Zinfandel is popular wine right out of the bottle with notes of red cherry fruit with black pepper spice. Although not as fruit-forward as the 2013 vintage (our first release), this wine bright red fruit on the palate with a core of crushed pepper spice on a medium bodied palate. This wine drinks well now and should be enjoyed over the next 5 years.
